2023 Domaine Marquis d’Angerville Volnay 1er Cru “Champans”, Burgundy, France - 1.5L MAG

Structured, expressive, and archetypal Volnay, the 2023 Champans in magnum format showcases depth and elegance in perfect harmony. Aromas of red cherry, raspberry, dried rose, and warm spice lead into a firm yet refined palate with layered fruit, chalky tannins, and vibrant acidity. More muscular than Caillerets, yet equally poised, this is a wine built for long aging, its precision and texture enhanced in magnum.

ABOUT THIS WINE

Champans is one of Volnay’s most famous Premier Crus, located mid-slope with excellent sun exposure and deep, well-draining soils of clay-limestone. Marquis d’Angerville’s 4-hectare holding is one of the largest and most important parcels in the climat, producing wines that are fuller and more structured than other Volnay 1er Crus, while still retaining the village’s hallmark finesse.

The 2023 vintage brought a return to classical balance in Burgundy. Moderate warmth and healthy rainfall allowed for slow ripening and excellent phenolic maturity, resulting in wines with precise aromatics, fine tannins, and vivid freshness. As always, the grapes were hand-harvested and fermented with native yeasts, aged in French oak (about 20% new), and bottled unfined and unfiltered.

In the glass, Champans reveals notes of crushed red berries, plum skin, orange zest, rose petal, and subtle spice. The palate is concentrated and mouth-coating but never heavy, with a firm mineral backbone and a persistent, savory finish. In magnum, the wine develops more slowly and retains freshness longer, making it ideal for aging 12–25 years. Serve with duck breast, lamb, or wild mushroom dishes.

ABOUT THIS PRODUCER

Domaine Marquis d’Angerville is a benchmark producer in Volnay and across Burgundy, with a family legacy dating back to the early 1800s. Under the stewardship of Guillaume d’Angerville, the domaine has embraced biodynamic viticulture (certified since 2006) and a restrained, site-transparent approach to winemaking.

The estate is famed for its deep understanding of Volnay’s terroirs, and Champans—along with Clos des Ducs and Caillerets—sits at the heart of that identity. Treated with the same exacting care as the domaine’s monopole holdings, Champans is always one of the most structured and cellar-worthy wines in the range.

The 2023 Volnay 1er Cru “Champans” in magnum perfectly reflects d’Angerville’s signature style: purity, energy, and terroir fidelity, wrapped in a frame of quiet power and long aging potential.
