2023 Domaine Marquis d’Angerville Volnay 1er Cru “Taillepieds”, Burgundy, France

Tense, linear, and deeply mineral, the 2023 Taillepieds is one of the most focused and terroir-driven wines in the d’Angerville lineup. Aromas of redcurrant, sour cherry, graphite, and crushed herbs unfurl with air, while the palate is chiseled and stony, framed by firm yet ultra-fine tannins and piercing acidity. It’s a cerebral and age-worthy Volnay—pure, vertical, and uncompromising in its elegance.

ABOUT THIS WINE

The Taillepieds vineyard, named for its steep, rocky incline ("cut feet"), is one of Volnay’s highest and most mineral-rich Premier Crus. The soils are thin, gravelly limestone with excellent drainage, producing wines of tension, transparency, and long aging potential. Domaine Marquis d’Angerville’s parcel sits high on the slope and consistently delivers one of the domaine’s most structured and intellectual expressions of Pinot Noir.

The 2023 vintage offered moderate conditions and long hang times, yielding fruit with vibrant acidity, fine tannins, and detailed aromatic profiles. Harvested by hand and fermented with native yeasts, the wine was aged in French oak barrels (approximately 20% new) for 12–14 months, with no fining or filtration—preserving purity and structure.

In the glass, the 2023 Taillepieds opens slowly with aromas of tart red berries, wet stone, dried rose, and forest floor. The palate is taut and vertical, driven by stony minerality and luminous acidity. Less plush than Champans and more angular than Caillerets, Taillepieds demands cellaring and rewards patience. Ideal drinking window: 2029–2045+. Pair with dishes like venison, truffled poultry, or mushroom consommé to match its depth and precision.

ABOUT THIS PRODUCER

Domaine Marquis d’Angerville is one of Volnay’s most iconic and influential producers, with a family history dating back to the early 19th century. Now led by Guillaume d’Angerville, the estate is a model of biodynamic viticulture, precision farming, and site-transparent winemaking. Certified biodynamic since 2006, the domaine’s approach emphasizes minimal intervention, native yeasts, restrained oak, and long élévage.

Each Premier Cru is vinified individually, highlighting the nuances of Volnay’s varied terroirs. Taillepieds is often the most austere and mineral-driven of the range—a wine that speaks in a whisper but leaves a lasting impression.

The 2023 Taillepieds captures the essence of this dramatic site with its purity, linear drive, and refined austerity. It is a wine of detail and depth—an intellectual Pinot Noir for those who value subtlety, structure, and longevity.
