2023 Fitapreta Branco "O Ancestral", Alentejano, Portugal

An arresting white with depth and soul, the 2023 O Ancestral from Fitapreta is a field blend-driven expression of Alentejo’s forgotten white heritage. Aromatically complex and slightly oxidative in style, it opens with dried apricot, orange blossom, hay, and wet stone. The palate is textural and layered, balancing phenolic grip with vivid acidity, finishing long with hints of bitter almond, sea spray, and spice. This is a wine that rewards both curiosity and contemplation.

ABOUT THE WINE

“O Ancestral” is a revivalist project by António Maçanita, one of Portugal’s most dynamic winemakers, aiming to resurrect the traditional white field blends of Alentejo that predate modern replantings. The wine is sourced from old, mixed-variety vineyards at higher elevations, where indigenous grapes like Roupeiro, Rabo de Ovelha, Tamarez, and others grow side by side. Fermented with native yeasts in used barrels and amphora, and aged on the lees without bâtonnage, the 2023 vintage preserves its natural structure and savory edge. No corrections, minimal sulfites, and a gentle oxidative touch make this a true “ancestral” wine in style and substance. Expect aromas of citrus peel, dried herbs, chamomile, and flint, with a textured mouthfeel and refreshing salinity. Pair it with aged sheep’s cheese, grilled sardines, or mushroom risotto.

ABOUT THE PRODUCER

Fitapreta Vinhos, founded by António Maçanita in the early 2000s, is based in the Alentejo but takes an unorthodox and terroir-focused approach to this traditionally warm, bulk-producing region. With a background in both oenology and wine archaeology, Maçanita has made it his mission to rediscover and rehabilitate Portugal’s native grape varieties and traditional winemaking methods. Fitapreta is known for dry-farmed vineyards, minimal intervention, and a dedication to expressing site, grape, and history. The O Ancestral line is emblematic of this vision—bringing forgotten grapes and styles into the present with authenticity, complexity, and a deep sense of place.
