ABOUT THIS PRODUCER
The estate, situated on the lower slopes of the Simonsberg Mountain, has a storied history dating back to the 17th century and is celebrated for its commitment to producing wines that reflect the unique terroir of the region. Established in 1929 by Paul Sauer, the estate has remained family-owned and is currently managed by his grandsons, Johann and Paul Krige. The name "Kanonkop," meaning "cannon hill," originates from a cannon once fired from the estate's hilltop to signal the arrival of ships in Table Bay during the 17th century.
The estate's vineyards are planted on ancient decomposed granite soils on the lower slopes of the Simonsberg Mountain. This terroir, combined with the moderating influences of the Atlantic Ocean, imparts unique characteristics to the grapes. Kanonkop's commitment to traditional winemaking techniques includes fermenting grapes in open-top concrete tanks with manual punch-downs and aging wines in French oak barrels. Winemaker Abrie Beeslaar, who joined the estate in 2002, emphasizes capturing the essence of each vintage, allowing the natural conditions of the year to influence the wine's character.
