WHAT'S IN THE PACK?
• 2021 Rodrigo Mendez & Alberto Orte "Muti" Albarino, Rias Baixas, Spain $45.99
Muti Albariño was conceived as a tribute to Patrick Mata’s mother Christiane, with whom he spoke German at home – “Muti” means “Mom” in German.
Tasting Notes: A complex, highly perfumed bouquet evokes orange zest, white flowers, candied ginger and dusty minerals, with a suggestion of fresh fig in the background.
• 2021 Forjas de Salnés “Cos Pés" Albariño, Rías Baixas, Spain $51.99
This is an Albariño made like those from the past: indigenous fermentation using whole clusters and skins, and aged in used wooden barrels.
Tasting Notes: Ripe peach and candied lime alongside seaspray and a gravelly minerality. The palate is round, with tarter citrus and subtle tropical fruits giving way to delicate white flowers and orchard blossoms.
• 2021 Rodrigo Mendez "O Raio da Vella" Albariño, Rias Baixas, Spain $59.99
The altitude for this wine is 0 feet. O Raio da Vella is located on the edge of the Atlantic. This is the inaugural vintage for this 1.5 hectare single parcel 100% Albariño selected for its extraordinary aromatic and textural characteristics.
Tasting Notes: Intense aromas of Meyer Lemon, bay leaf, fennel, white grapefruit, lime rind with a hint of paperwhites and lemon meringue. The addition of fennel, quince and silky olive oil texture. The wine has beautiful length with a backbone of acidity and salinity that hints at its proximity to the ocean.
• 2021 Rodrigo Mendez "Salvora" Albariño, Rias Baixas, Spain $74.99
Made from grapes grown in a single vineyard planted since 1905 in his grandmother's backyard, Sálvora is the first wine that winemaker Rodrigo Mendez ever drank.
Tasting Notes: Light brilliant yellow. Ripe, mineral-accented pear, orange zest, white flowers and ginger on the fragrant nose; notes of honey and smoky lees add complexity. Lush orchard and pit fruit flavors gain depth and spiciness with air, picking up a zestier Meyer lemon nuance on the back half. The pear note carries strongly through the seamless, impressively long finish, which shows excellent clarity and a bright mineral cut.
• 2021 Forjas de Salnés "Goliardo A Telleira" Albariño, Rias Baixas, Spain $81.99
The unique winemaking techniques and talents of lifelong viticulturalist, Rodri Mendez, make for a very interesting project.
100% Albariño. Vines planted in 1973. Tended in sandy soil at 5 m (16 ft) elevation. This Albariño undergoes a process ranging from free run, natural must, to skin fermentation, to foudre fermentation to resting in a stainless steel tank.
Tasting Notes: Mineral-accented pear, orange zest and iodine on the nose. Dry and nervy on the palate, offering vibrant, densely packed Meyer lemon and pear flavors underscored by a suave floral element. Long, textured finish.
• 2019 Lagar de Pintos "Los Nietos" Albariño, Rías Baixas, Spain $89.99
This wine is named for ‘the grandchildren,’ who represent the future of the winery, and whose approaches to the future of Albariño — such as extreme aging on the lees — is exceptionally bright.
Tasting Notes: Deep gold in color, with intense aromas of citrus, herbs, and the toasty notes offered by the extended lees contact. On the palate, the wine recalls dried fruits, almonds, and the sea, with a toasty, saline, extremely dry finish.
