California’s wine history dates back to the late 18th century, when Spanish missionaries planted the first vineyards to produce sacramental wine. The Gold Rush of the mid-1800s brought rapid growth, especially in Northern California, but Prohibition (1920–1933) devastated the industry. After its repeal, winemakers rebuilt, focusing on quality and innovation. A turning point came in 1976 at the Judgment of Paris, where California wines famously outperformed top French wines in a blind tasting. Since then, California has become a global leader in wine, known for its diverse regions, grape varieties, and pioneering winemaking techniques.
