ABOUT THE WINERY
North of the town of Radda you will find the highest vines in the entire Chianti Classico region, almost all of which belong to the picture-book winery Castello di Volpaia. This once walled and hilltop medieval village is one of the best preserved of its time and is a historic founding member of the "Lega del Chianti", Volpaia's winemaking tradition dates back to 1172.
The traditions and values of aristocratic country life have been preserved here since the early 1970s by the admirable Giovanna Stianti and her family. Most of the winery's employees now live within the village walls that still partially surround the fortress and which the family, originally from Florence, restored for this purpose.
The winery comprises 45 hectares of vineyards that climb steeply up to the impressive village. The fact that the skeletal subsoil found there is very different from the soils in the rest of the Chianti Classico region is expressed in the elegant wines. A lower clay content and the obviously higher proportion of sand and sandstone make for far less rustic but very finely structured Sangiovese wines.
Giovanna and her husband Carlo Mascheroni, who died in 2017, were the first to make use of modern techniques such as temperature-controlled fermentation within Chianti Classicos. Thanks to their pioneering spirit, which remains unbroken to this day, the wine cellar of Castello di Volpaia continues to be equipped with the most innovative winemaking technologies every five years.
The resulting fine wines reflect the character of the enchanting place and of Sangioveto - the local clone of Sangiovese. They correspond to the refined style of the so-called "Alto Chianti" wines, which is partly due to this special clone selection. The vines here are partly cultivated on steep slopes at a dizzying 450 to 650 metres above sea level using organic farming methods.
The Stianti-Mascheroni family has always been committed to sustainable and environmentally friendly cultivation, where no pesticides or synthetic chemicals are used. For this reason, it is said almost succinctly from the winery that the official conversion to organic viticulture in 2000 was mainly a matter of bureaucracy.
The wines show a very appealing interplay of acidity, tannin and alcohol, which they achieve thanks to the expert hands of the talented oenologist Lorenzo Regoli and the support of the "flying winemaker" Riccardo Cotarella. From the young Chianti Classico to the Riserva wines aged in large wood and the sophisticated Gran Selezione: the wines from Castello di Volpaia are clearly among the best in the region
